The spotlight has been on abortion laws this week, as pro-choice activists fear that the US is rapidly moving towards further limiting abortion rights… 💔

Last Thursday, the US Supreme Court rejected a request by abortion providers to have the ‘Senate Bill 8’ sent to a district judge, who had previously moved to abolish/block it ❌

What does this mean?

• In the 1973 ‘Roe V.S Wade’ ruling that legalized abortion in the US, the ruling guaranteed a woman's right to an abortion until the fetus is viable outside the womb, typically around 22 to 24 weeks 👍

• However, on September 1st, Texas implemented Senate Bill 8, a law that prevents abortion after six weeks 😡

• This law doesn’t make exceptions for women and girls who were raped, and it gets around the ‘Roe V.S Wade’ ruling by giving members of the public the ability to sue doctors who perform abortions - or anyone who helps facilitate them 👎

• This means that abortion clinics all over Texas have had to close their doors in fear of being sued❗

• Last weeks ruling to keep Bill 8 in place, is proving that the majority of the US Supreme Court carry an anti-abortion stance… meaning it is likely more abortion restrictions will follow 💔

What are pro-choice activists doing about this?

• A community of pro-choice Latina activists in Texas are taking a stand against this, running for office, helping women in need go to providers out of state, and donating to funds that help pay for travel and the procedure 💪

• Justice Sotomayor, the only Latina on the Supreme Court, critiqued the Supreme Courts decision last Thursday as being unjust and a rights violation 👏

• Last week, pro-choice activist Jex Blackmore took an abortion pill on LIVE television during an abortion debate, declaring that:

‘Abortion is a common and safe medical procedure surrounded by stigma. Stigma keeps people silent about their personal experiences and creates space for harmful, inaccurate narratives.

My action was intended to dispel some of those myths, misinformation, and stigma. I wanted to share, that for many of us, it's a simple process and with mail-order pills, we can have an abortion on our own terms.'

WHAT A QUEEN! 💕👸

The World Health Organization released a journal in 2021, revealing that when many pregnant women have no access to safe, timely, affordable, and respectful abortion care, they resort to unsafe abortions- often by untrained persons using dangerous and invasive methods 💔

• Estimates from 2012 indicate that in developing countries alone, 7 million women per year were treated in hospital facilities for complications of unsafe abortion

• Each year, 4.7–13.2% of maternal deaths can be attributed to unsafe abortion

• In developed regions, it is estimated that 30 women die for every 100,000 unsafe abortions

• In developing regions, that number rises to 220 deaths per 100,000 unsafe abortions

• Around 45% of all abortions are unsafe, of which 97% take place in developing countries

This is why it is so important to fight to ensure that women have access to SAFE abortion services! 💪
